Oh, the world of lobbying! It's a game where corporations try to influence the government to do their bidding. And while some are as subtle as a bulldozer in a library, others are like a ninja in a dark alleyway.
Take, for example, the Microsoft lobbyists who introduced a bill in Massachusetts to restrict the use of student data for commercial purposes, but with a sneaky twist: to exclude their competitor, Google Docs. Crafty, right?
But now, with the help of AI tools, the game of lobbying is about to get even more guileful. Microlegislation is the new buzzword, where lobbyists can propose small, targeted laws that are hard to trace back to who benefits from them. And with the help of AI, lobbyists can predict the success of their proposed amendments and even generate draft legislative texts.
The downside of all this is that it could make it even harder to figure out who's pulling the strings behind the scenes.
But don't worry, AI developers are on the case, mapping out the complex network of stakeholders involved in the legislative process. However, the real winners here will be the big players who are already rich and influential.
So, to avoid any shenanigans, we need to strengthen disclosure requirements on lobbyists and limit the ability of government officials turned lobbyists to sell access to their colleagues still in government. Let's keep this game fair and square!
