Will AI Become the Next Lawmaker?

Oh, the world of lobbying! It's a game where corporations try to influence the government to do their bidding. And while some are as subtle as a bulldozer in a library, others are like a ninja in a dark alleyway.

Take, for example, the Microsoft lobbyists who introduced a bill in Massachusetts to restrict the use of student data for commercial purposes, but with a sneaky twist: to exclude their competitor, Google Docs. Crafty, right?

But now, with the help of AI tools, the game of lobbying is about to get even more guileful. Microlegislation is the new buzzword, where lobbyists can propose small, targeted laws that are hard to trace back to who benefits from them. And with the help of AI, lobbyists can predict the success of their proposed amendments and even generate draft legislative texts.

The downside of all this is that it could make it even harder to figure out who's pulling the strings behind the scenes.

But don't worry, AI developers are on the case, mapping out the complex network of stakeholders involved in the legislative process. However, the real winners here will be the big players who are already rich and influential.

So, to avoid any shenanigans, we need to strengthen disclosure requirements on lobbyists and limit the ability of government officials turned lobbyists to sell access to their colleagues still in government. Let's keep this game fair and square!

  1. EXPHORMER: The Mighty Saver of Graph Transformers' Wallets!

Some brainiacs from the University of British Columbia, Google Research, and the Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute have come up with a new way to scale up graph transformers (GT) while cutting costs. Basically, GTs are awesome at modeling long-range interactions, but they're not so great at handling big and complex graphs because they get all tired and cranky. The geniuses behind Exphormer have created a framework that equips GTs with superpowers, making them more scalable, efficient, and powerful than ever before. (Read More)

  2. The Disruptor That's Here to Crash the Party (and Take Your Job)

The development of AGI, or artificial intelligence with human-like cognitive abilities, could potentially revolutionize the world and lead to a new era of creativity. However, this paradigm shift could also raise significant social issues and threaten jobs. The release of ChatGPT and the more powerful GPT-4 by OpenAI has brought AGI one step closer to reality, leading to an arms race among tech giants in Silicon Valley (Read More)

  3. Robot Assistant Gets $350M to Save You from Tech Headaches and Keep Your Coffee Hot

A startup that aims to build AI that can learn how to use software for people, has raised $350 million from Spark Capital and General Catalyst. The technology is still years away, but Adept co-founder David Luan predicts that AI will be executing typed queries within two to three years, rather than just displaying human-like responses. The idea is for an AI assistant to help humans with tasks like creating a blueprint for a car part or navigating complex enterprise software tools (Read More)
