Could AI language models like OpenAI's ChatGPT be the future of medicine? That's what Robert Pearl, former CEO of Kaiser Permanente and a professor at Stanford medical school, believes. In fact, Pearl insists that if he were still in charge of Kaiser Permanente, he would require all of its 24,000 physicians to start using ChatGPT in their practice immediately.

According to Pearl, "No physician who practices high-quality medicine will do so without accessing ChatGPT or other forms of generative AI." He believes that AI language models will be more important to doctors than the stethoscope was in the past. Pearl isn't the only one who thinks that AI language models could revolutionize the healthcare industry. Companies like Microsoft Research and Google are already developing their own AI language models for medical tasks.

However, there is also fear that AI technology could provide inaccurate responses leading to an incorrect diagnosis or treatment plan. Companies developing AI technology, such as Microsoft Research, have introduced medical benchmarks to build more capable systems. While there are concerns about accuracy and bias, the potential for ChatGPT to help reduce the 250,000 deaths that occur annually in the US as a result of medical errors is exciting. Pearl believes that language models like ChatGPT can become as powerful as an iPhone, packed with features that can augment doctors and help patients manage chronic disease. Despite the rapid pace of improvement in the technology, Pearl notes that some things should remain human-to-human conversations, such as end-of-life discussions and procedures with high risks of complication. 👉Read More👈
